Wanstead High School Homework Year 9000

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Will I get paid during the programme?

Unsalaried Training Programme: The majority of our vacancies follow this route, and for a number of the course, you may qualify for a government bursary. These are designed to help you with your tuition fees of £9,000 and cost of living during the training year. The amount depends on your degree class and the subject you teach, and could be anything up to £25,000. You may also qualify for a student loan to cover the cost of your tuition fee.

Whichever funding you receive, you will also qualify as a student during your training year, which means you are eligible for student discounts nationally.

Salaried: If you have worked for three years or more since graduating, you may qualify for a salary. This will be based on the national Unqualified Teacher Scale, and your school will pay for your tuition fees. We currently only have placements for Primary Salaried positions.

2.Where will I be based?

You will be placed for the main part of your training at one of our placement schools listed above. You will also have an alternative experience for a minimum of 30 days at an alternative school within our partnership.

3.How will the interview process work?

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview. These dates are generally run on a Thursday at London Metropolitan University. You will be informed by the London Met admissions office of when and where to attend, and how to prepare for the day. Interviews usually consist of a short teaching task, an interview and a written task.

If you are applying for places with Goldsmiths or the Institute of Education you will be invited to an interview at our academy, and will also be interviewed by the institution.

4.Do I need my skills tests?

You cannot start a teacher training course unless you have already passed your skills tests (you can find out about how to sit these through the DfE website). Before you take a skills test, you have to have proof that you have been invited to an interview. You are at an advantage if you can sit and pass the tests before the interview. Any place that you are offered by us will be conditional upon passing the skills tests.

5.Do I need Grade C in English, Maths and Science?

If you are applying for Primary, you need GCSE grade C (or equivalents) in all three; if you are a secondary applicant, you will need your English and Maths. You can enquire about taking equivalency exams via http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/.

6.Who shall I contact if I have further questions?

Please email Stuart Mee smee@aylwardacademy.orgdirectly.
